Alaska and Yukon Territory - From Valdez to Skagway - July 10-19

We left Valdez and headed north once again on the Richardson Highway.  There are only a couple of roads in and out of Alaska so there really is no easy way to do a loop without driving at least some of the roads twice.   This section of the trip took us back to Tok where we picked up the Alaska Highway.  We turned south at Haines Junction onto the Haines Highway, stayed a few days in Haines, took a ferry from Haines to Skagway before heading back to the Alaska Highway via the Klondike Highway and Tagish Road.

We enjoyed Haines.  It has a small town feel.  People were friendly, lots of local craftsman and artists.  We stayed in a campground right on the harbor.  Skagway was a completely different story.  It is way overdeveloped, they are geared toward cruise ships, not RVs, most of the stores and restaurants were not locally owned, and there was very little real Alaska to be found.  That said, Skagway is at the base of the Chilkoot Trail and the Klondike National Historic Site is there (as well as in Seattle). We did a walking tour with a Park Ranger and enjoyed it very much.

  1. Hi Celina - I just bumped into this looking for a photo of Rancheria falls and voila! your beautiful one popped up. May I used it for our new Yukon Campgrounds and Rec sites brochure? (free publication). I will send you as many copies as you want. To contact me at Yukon Parks, email Sara.Nielsen@gov.yk.ca or 1-867-667-8299. Hope to hear from you soon! It's the perfect image I've been looking for.
